US ETF trade in the month of April hit its lowest monthly transaction volume since August of 2020. US ETFs saw $2.1 Trillion dollars trade in April, down almost 50% from March. Incidentally, April registered the lowest trade volume in the Treasury market in two years.
According to Wells Fargo Investment Institute’s Sameer Samana, the slowdown may be in part due to exhaustion and indifference among investors in the wake of one of the fastest rate hikes in US history, persisting inflation, March’s bank collapses, and unrelenting market uncertainty.
The VIX volatility index also showed volatility was down in the month of April. The fall of Silicon Valley Bank pushed the index over 30 in March, only to see the VIX fall for six weeks and end April below 16, the lowest recording since November of 2021.
